Piarom Dates
Piarom Dates
Piarom dates (also known as Maryami or chocolate dates) are one of the most luxurious, high-quality, and expensive varieties of dates in Iran and worldwide. This date is exclusively produced in Iran, with its primary origin in Hajiabad county, Hormozgan province, where the mountainous climate, nutrient-rich soil, and suitable irrigation produce superior quality.
Physical and Appearance Characteristics
- Shape and size — Elongated and oval, large (length approximately 3 to 5 cm), fleshy with a high flesh-to-pit ratio.
- Color — Dark brown to black (premium grade) or lighter brown (golden type from younger palms).
- Skin — Very thin, tightly adhered to the flesh, slightly wrinkled, not easily separable but edible.
- Texture — Semi-dry, firm yet soft and moist, with high shelf life (up to 18-24 months at room temperature).
- Taste — Mildly sweet with a caramel and chocolate flavor, no excess syrup, melts in the mouth.
These features make Piarom dates primarily consumed and exported as dry or semi-dry, unlike moist varieties such as Mazafati.
Harvesting and Storage
Harvesting is late-season, from late September to early November. Due to low moisture content, it has excellent durability and does not require refrigeration, though storage in a cool, dry place preserves it better.
